The Green Grotto caves played a large part in Jamaican history. They are believed to have been used as dwellings for the first inhabitants of the island, Arawak Indians known as the Tainos. Learn More.

Green Grotto Caves, one of the most well-known tourist destinations in St. Ann, obtain its name from the green algae that coat their walls. The cave’s beautiful stalactites, stalagmites, and other exquisite dripstone formations will undoubtedly be seen as you explore it. A crystal-clear subterranean lake may be found in the cavern’s innermost chamber, while a wishing well can be found outside.

Over the decades, the caves, which are home to bats and other aquatic species, have served as a haven for fugitives and emancipated slaves.

The pristine Grotto Lake is tucked away in a deep grotto. Through the canopy of stalactites and stalagmites that covers the tunnels, filtered light filters down from pockets in the limestone overhead.

The highlight of an outing here is often swimming, while you enjoy paddling through water that shimmers with vivid blue hues all around you.
